Canine Driver's License

My dog should have had a driver's license.
For years I would bring Geddy Lee to Sheridan. He was great with the students, and if a students was having a bad day, they could take Geddy for a short walk outside or just pet him for a few minutes.
I would call Geddy in front of the class and command him to "sit."
He would sit immediately.
He stayed seated until I gave him another command.
I would then explain to my students that Geddy sits the first time I tell him, and that my teens need to be told multiple times to sit!
Geddy stays seated- my students often get up after 30 seconds for some silly reason...
And they want a driver's license? I think my dog followed directions better than some of my students!
But he hated wearing sunglasses...

The Internet & Revolutions

Revolutions in the middle-east and Africa are the result of the internet. People are now able to see how others live and what they believe, and when an oppressed people learn of the freedoms of others, and lack of opportunity in their country, they revolt.
Before the internet, many simply accepted their way of life- they knew of no other option. Yet, when they can click on a screen and see the prosperity and freedoms of others, they begin to question their government and their lack of freedoms and opportunities. This is why some governments limit internet content/purpse.
The town crier, the newspaper, the radio, the television- all were slow and often censored.
Today, many can see unfiltered and accurate images of people all over the world. This is the seed of change (good or bad), and recent uprisings can be related directly to the ability to millions to access the internet and see how others live.

Challenging Times, from close to afar

Much is happening in my little world right now. Let me start at Sheridan. The economy has affected our program (like so many others) and we have made some changes to continue to provide quality, college-prep education to our students. We are very grateful for the volunteer Board of Directors who have seen us through difficult times and provided countless volunteer hours to keep growing.
Meridian schools will be challenged this year. Before I founded Sheridan Academy, I taught at Meridian Middle school for two years. At that time, it was the largest middle school west of the Rockies. Now there will be fewer teachers and larger classes for all grades. I don't see how we are to provide college-ready students to our universities if we continue to underfund our public education programs (hence, one of the reasons I left public schools).
One of the best classes I ever had was at BSU. The professor was Dr. Pat Beiter (the father of our mayor) and there were FIVE grad students! What a wonderful experience being fully involved in the lectures/dicussions/lessons and receiving immediate feedback on my progress. A small class makes a difference and I want all students to get as much as possible out of every class that they attend.

15th Graduation

On June 2, 2011 we held our 15th Annual Graduation and Awards Banquet. Thre seniors received high school diplomas (congrats Scott, Sunnie, Hadrien!) and five others got CASH for their efforts.
The students looked great dressed up and a skit by Isabella and Alia was a success!

We are very proud of all of our students!

Mayor's Choice Awards

Last April, Anthony was a recipient of the Mayor's Choice Award.
Anthony was one of 85 11th grade students in the entire Treasure Valley to receive this awards for his outstanding academic and social improvements!

Needs of Society

The needs of the community and of society dictate the teaching of the populace. For each community the goals and needs are to be supported and met by those entering the workforce with the skills and talents to satisfy the ideals of the society in which they live. These skills are the responsibility of the parents, schools and students.
If we are moving to an educational system where one can acquire a foundation of knowledge and social growth through technology, then must teach our students the benefits of technology in learning and work. We cannot see 5, 10, 20 years ahead. yet, by having students learn on-line, we are proposing that this form of learning will be valuable and commonplace in the near future.
What concerns me is that youth in our schools are still being molded and forged. They need social and interpersonal skills for success in today's business and today's society. By forcing them to learn on-line, we take away another opportunity to learn face-to-face interaction. Do we envision a complete college degree on-line without ever having to stand in front of a group of people to inform them of your findings? Even if they present speeches and assignments on-line, the idioms of face, voice, and body language need to be taught. Students need to be taught how body language, voice tone, and word choice make a difference in the message being sent.
I understand that computers for Idaho students will save money, but we will be asking a 15-year old to go to her room, log on, and do history? Really? Does she have the discipline to stay focused and complete the assignments without supervision? If you sent me to a Porsche showroom and told me that I had 45 minutes to count all the ceiling tiles I probably would not give you a very accurate number...
Are we preparing our students for success in the business world by having them do studies on-line? Are the needs of the Treasure Valley and the State of Idaho being addressed by providing our students with larger classes and less social interaction? Knowledge without grace is not very effective. Problem solving skills and group work will better allow our students to find success in the workforce and in their personal lives.

Rake-Up Boise

On Saturday, November 13, we will participate in Rake Up Boise where we go and rake and bag leaves for those near our school that are elderly and/or disabled.
This is the 15th year that we have participated in this community event (we also particpate in Sweep the River- working with Parks and Recreation to clean up the Boise River) and it is good for our students to give back to the community.
You are welcome to bring a rake and join us!

Halloween!

Our yearly tradition of Trick-Or-Treating on Warm Springs Boulevard was again a hit with our international students. Some of our international students do not know what it means to trick-or-treat and I once tried to explain that you knock on the door, yell, "trick-or-treat!" and the person answering the door gives you candy. One innocent international girl, said to me, "So we must beg for food?" Oh boy. I told another to bring aa bag for candy and she brought a sandwich baggie!
This year was much fun and I give much thanks to the homes on Warm Springs for providing candy for hundreds of costumed children!

Our 15th Year!!!

We are celebrating our 15th year as an accredited private high school! What a success! What support from SO many in the Treasure Valley and beyond...
Hundreds of students have benefited from our program and we are working to help many, many more!

We MOVED the school and have LOWERED tuition to reach more students!

So far this year we have students from Boise, Meridian, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Mexico, and Belgium! What a great mix! Skiing will be a first for many of them.

Two seniors (Scott and Hadrien) are settling into their senior year and working hard for standardized tests and college.

Dog Days of Summer

Yes, our school calendar has three months "off" for summer vacation.
I never really understood why we have that time off. We're not working the fields anymore.
I've always done academics in the summer. Something to keep learning. Yet we condition our teens that they can stop learning after the first part of June and not read/write/calculate until the end of August.
Many teachers need their break- I respect that (actually, many work another job). If the students are not academically at grade level, then they should be required to continue learning through summer...

We have moved to a new location to better serve our students. Our new address is 4948 Kootenai Street, Suite 205, Boise, Idaho 83705. Phone and fax stay the same. We are close to Cassia Park for sports and on a major bus route (Orchard Street) and close to BURGER TIME!!!!!!!

A very special thank you to all who helped us move! The trailers, trucks, and muscle were much appreciated. It is good to go through and clean out items that we have not used and probably will not use.
We appreciate the Board Members buying pizzas for all of us and everyone giving up a day to help our school.

14th Graduation and Awards Banquet

Our two seniors, Supamitra Srisup and Nam Phan completed all requirements required for the State Of Idaho and our accreditation and they received their High School Diplomas! We are very proud of them and we are confident that they will do well in college!

I attended a huge high school graduation at the Taco Bell Arena recently. As I stood for our National Anthem and THEN our PLEDGE I took offense to you, in section 18, as you sat with your do-rag on your head, chatted with your "handicapped" mother/sister (she is handicapped because her knees gave out- her knees gave out because she got FAT) - you sat and bitched about parking while the rest of us sang with our hands over our hearts and then recited the Pledge of Allegiance...

I TEACH young men and women and I TEACH them that although they may not AGREE with things, they must RESPECT things...

My brother and father served in the miltary for this country, and your blatant disregard for protocol/respect/patriotism has prompted me to RANT to those who read this social network site.

Ten years ago I would have dragged you out of that forum for your disregard- remove you from a ceremony that means much to me and the others...

Shame on you!

In 1981, at Dodger Stadium, I saw two "men" drunk and dancing 10 rows below me during our National Anthem. As I sang with my hand over my heart, I found it odd that an old man was walking down the stairs towards these two punks (they don't even pour beer or serve you a hot dog during the National Anthem). The old man side-stepped past a couple then SUCKER punched one of the hat-wearing-disrespectful punks and sent him into the row in front.

Although the old man/veteran was removed by 3 security guards, we all applauded him...

Parmamedics collected the young guy on a stretcher.

I don't condone violence and I respect your rights, but when 1000 people are standing for our National Anthem at a HIGH SCHOOL graduation, you need to show respect for them.

The 14th Annual Sheridan Academy Graduation and Awards Banquet is next week (6/3/10). I am reflecting on the last 14 years of teaching at Sheridan Academy and I am pleased with what this "company" has become and what we produce.
After 14 years, alum come back and update us on what they have done post-Sheridan. we are always interested to see how they have grown and what they have experienced. Our alumni are in Korea (US Air Force), graduates of Boise State, Chico State, Oregon State, nursing programs, and other college programs.
We are proud of them.
This year I will hand two seniors a high school diploma. As always, I am nervous that they lack the skills that I know that they will need to be successful as full-time students at a university. And, every year, I am confident that we have done an excellent job preparing them for higher education.

I attended recently a large traditional school graduation for my step-daughter. So many students- I wonder where they will be in 5 or 10 years? Alas, I was 18 once also, and I figured it out...they will too.

My day-to-day job requirements often move me away from my students and more towards administration. I know that running this school requires much managerial and admin attention, but I feel most rewarded working with my students. I am blessed (as are the students and parents) with wonderful teachers that have sacrificed so much to help our students. I know that our students are receiving an outstanding education for Sheridan teachers.

It has been a good year...!

Our twice yearly trip to the Boise Library! Book Sale was a success. Our students saw and purchased many wonderful hard and paperback books. You could fill a bag for $9!
We always find something good to read...
A student once brought in an electronic "pad" on which were downloaded some classic books. I watched as he "turned" the pages tapping the screen with a stylus. We had the same book (Hemingway) in our library, but he read it on his liquid screen. I don't think that he ever finished the story.
Technology is here and must be embraced. However, as a teacher I must impart values to my students as well as knowledge. I want them to value books. I want them to feel the heft of the paper. I want them to smell the ink and dust. I want them to touch the pages. I want them to feel pride in ownership of a book that had an effect on them.

"We should only read books that wound or stab us."

Off the touristy main street in Santa Barbara was a non-descript run down store front. The half-hung sign that twisted in the breeze outside said, "Wilson's Books." No store hours were posted, the door locked, and through the dusty window I saw stacks of books and overstuffed shelves precariously close to each other.
Many times I walked by and I wondered if "Wilson" even existed- the store was never open.
I stopped taking the detour to visit the closed store for a long time. Then one afternoon I looked down the alley and the door was open! I entered and the musty smell and maze of stacked books were a stark contrast from the bight colors and neat rows of merchandise in nearby boutiques.
A croaky "Hello" startled me and I turned to see Wilson seated in a rocking chair reading a book. My first thought was "Mark Twain!" He had on a sweater with leather patches on the elbows, a shock of white hair, and was holding an unlit pipe. "Let me know if I can help you find something," he said barely taking his eyes off the page of his book.
Stepping over stacks of books (did the fire department know of this?) I discerned somesort of organization based on themes (Dewey's system was no where to be found), and soon I was in the "adventure" section...

Santa Barbara, California.

Many years ago I taught at a private school in La Canada, Ca. I had a student, Steven, from a family with money, yet he dressed acted like a ganster wannabe. I could not understand that his father (an NBC executive) and his mother (a lawyer) allowed this young man to dress and act the way that he did. He said that he would "cap" anyone who got in his way (?). I don't thinkthat he ever fired or owned a gun...

Perhaps he had the servants fooled, but not me. Once he was arrested for shoplifting packs of gum from a convenience store and he had $90 in his wallet! He wanted to be "tough," but I saw through his facade.

Alas, as my student, he admired my Mustang GT 5-speed, 5 litre rocket car.

One day after school, he was admiring the car and I asked if he wanted to go for a ride. Of course he said, "Yes!" and we were soon on the 210 freeway hitting 80 mph. After 30 minutes we were in a bad part of town- a place I would not want to be anytime.

As it was hot, I suggested that we get a Coke. I pulled up in front of a small mom-and-pop store and we got out. I opened the door to the store and let him walk in. I got back in the car with the intent to drive a couple blocks down and turn around, but the neighborhood got worse so I hopped on the freeway to the next exit to turn around and return to the store.

Standing in front of the store was Steven- clad in the huge hockey shirt, dangling "gold" chains, and his pants around his thighs. His eyes were wide as he asked where I had gone. I said, "It's cool, why don't you go over there and hang out with the "locals." At the corner were some tough young men eyeing Steven, me and the car. We were in a "gangsta" area and Steven was VERY uncomfortable (so was I)...

Maybe posing as someone you are not can be dangerous? We left quickly and he was silent on the ride back to the school.

It was weeks before he would talk about the "drive" or even consider riding in the car again (he did love the acceleration!). I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride again, and he looked at me with trepidation. I told him we'd head to the beach (1.5) hours. He finally agreed and on a Friday after school we drove to Santa Barbara. After blazing up the 101 freeway along the coast, we drove down Cabrillo Boulevard. Here were bistros, shops, nice cars, CLEAN streets, and the hustle-bustle of people working and shopping.

On the beach girls tanned and people played volleyball in the clean ocean air as the boats slipped in and out of the marina. On State Street, we passed a man sitting outside at the cafe, working on his laptop. The gleam from his dress shoes matched the gleam from his Porsche parked in the street. I commented to Steve, "What do you think he does?" Steven didn't know, and neither did I, BUT! we both agreed that he had a pretty cool lifestyle to be sipping a latte on a Friday afternoon in the sun at a cafe...

I told Steven that he had the opportunity to do whatever he wanted with his life. I shared that he acts/thinks/desires to be a gangster wannabe and that that is fine, but did he want the lifestyle that we had seen 6 weeks ago? Or did he want what we experinced in Santa Barbara? (I also mentioned that Playboy magazine has found more playmates in Santa Barbara than any other city- you gotta hit the kid's interests!).

He has the financial support to go to college and do something with an education, and I hoped for the best for him.

I left the private school in 1993- he was 16. I wonder what he decided to do?

Teachers open the door to education, but the students have to walk through...

International Students

We have a new student from Thailand! Jirayus has never seen snow, so his host family tok him to the mountains so he could play!

He is doing well at Sheridan and enjoys speaking Thai with another student, May.

His first day here I asked him if he played basketball. He said, "a little."

Well! THAT was not true! He gives Anthony and Meagan great competition and Jirayus is an excellent basketball player!!

Duty, Honor, Country

One of our many field trips to Gowen Field to tour the Idaho National Guard.

As the son of a Navy experimental test pilot, I am familiar with the protocol and expectations when on a military base. For some of our students, this is a new world.

To see a Master Sergeant standing at parade rest (and a BIG guy too!) was impressive as we walked into the tank traning facility. A place for everything, and everything in its place. No trash, everything clean and ready if you need it. We clamored through tanks, held machine guns, and learned that a tank was serious business.

Next was the flight line. Standing in a cold wind, we learned about the A-10 Warthog and how tough it is. If the F-35 comes to Gowen Field, then the A-10s will go to another base.

Each student sat in a $3,000,000.00 flight simulator and attempted to fly and shoor some targets. Interesting that my X-Box students did well...

We thank the Guardsmen and women for takign time to teach us about what they do, and why they do it.

Our Fundraiser was a hit! What amazing musicians who performed for our school! I have listened to Rosalie's CDs for years, but seeing her in concert was very impressive- a true performer. Ben Burdick and Bill Liles accompanied her (I have heard these guys many times at local venues, awesome!), and of course Gayle Chapman always does a fantastic job singing and playing.

The silent auction was great- many thanks to local businesses and individuals who donated items.

The wonderful crowd warmed my heart- there are so many people who support Sheridan and it was uplifting to see this support in one evening.

Kudos to Ha'Penny Bridge Pub for their excellent service and for owner Dale for allowing us to hold the concert there.

Finally, I am in awe of the work done by our Borad of Directors. These people were charged with a task and stepped up to the challenge! THANK YOU!

(I think we should do this again this Fall!)

Cuts in Education

Yes, our economy is tight, but cutting money from schools seems too harsh. Without an educated populace how are we to compete in a global economy? BSU has dissolved its International Studies Program? What are they thinking? Idaho spends ~$7500 per pupil per year (public schools) this puts us near the bottom of 50 states. I agree that money does not equate to a quality education (obviously, look what we do at Sheridan with minimum funds), but there has to be a respect and investment in the education of our youth. Thanks goodness the J. A. & Kathyrn Albertson Foundation has stepped in and provided for some higher education (College of Western Idaho) and an advertising campaign to educate Idahoans that you must have some schooling after high school to earn a decent wage and contribute to this great state.
No, we should not raise taxes- but can we cut reduce funding from other areas and enhance the educaton of youth in Idaho?

$12.00 per hour...

Every year our students do an exercise on living in Boise. They gather information related to cost of living: rent for a reasonable apartment, car insurance, food, utlities, car payment, etc.
Once an average has been computed we divide by a 40 hour work week. Without skiing at Bogus, shopping at the mall, eating out, MAYBE a cell-phone, and NO cable TV the amount last year (gross, hourly) is $12.00.
This exercise allows the students to see that without skills/education, their opportunities to earn a decent living are diminished.
This reality check stems from years of listening to teenagers tell me that after high school they will have a nice car, ski at Brundage, etc.
I am not a pessimist, but a realist. I WANT my students to have the things that they desire- I get frustrated when they cannot follow simple rules at Sheridan (no gum chewing, wear the school uniform correctly, for example) and they see themselves at some amazing job earning huge dollars.
If they cannot write a simple paragraph or follow simple instructions how will they comply with rules/demands of a high-paying job?
As you can see, I am frustrated...

What College is Best for Me?

I am often asked about college choice. I encourage my students to apply to many colleges and then they can pick the one that will be most suited for them (at this time).
Those students seeking business education should look for business school; medical education, medical schools, etc.
Nonetheless, one point that I adamantly make is the regardless of the university choice, the student's attitude and work ethic will make or break their education.
For example, if a freshman at Harvard sits in his dorm room playing video games and not attending class expects a "quality" education, he is wrong. On the other hand, if a student attends a state university, goes to every class, devourers his textbooks, joins clubs and gets everything possible out of the university's offerings, then that will be the most valuable education.
We teach a work ethic at Sheridan that we hope will stay with our students through college and work.

Student Growth

Although they will grow 4+ inches in a year, I don't notice that too much.
What I noticed today was intellectual growth.
Student "X" usually gives a cursory reading of a literature story just to get the slight idea of what the story means. The presentation "X" usually gives is dull, shallow and shows no higher order thinking.
Today we had growth. Perhaps it was the plot, tone, or setting, but the student gave a wonderful presentation. The student was excited to share with us what happened in the story and why the author wrote it.
I get surprised often with my students- I did not expect this from this student for a while...
I'm pleased!

School Vouchers

The United States has more consumer choice than any other country. We can choose our foods, clothes, cars, homes, communities.
However, school choice is still not available for K-12 children.
A voucher system would allow parents to patronize the school of their choice. In our free market economy parents and students could select the school that best fits their needs. Idaho allows for school choice within districts, but there is no recognition of private school choice.
Currently Idaho spends approimately $6,500 per pupil per year (lowest: Utah, $5,100, highest: Distric of Columbia, $13,200). Parents should be allowed to use that tax money for the school of their choice- public or private. Private schools should be accredited to receive a voucher. Religious schools will qualify as the Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that government aid (voucher) goes to the parent who use it at their discretion.
Magnet and charter schools serve a certain type of student and it is ridiculous to think that one school district can serve the needs of all the students residing in that district.

Last night I had the opportunity to discuss teaching with another educator whom I know only casually. It felt good to hear ideas and concerns similar and new to mine.

For eight years I have been lucky to have Mrs. Sirani at Sheridan to hear (privately, of course) my frustrations and concerns about the students.
Praise and rejoicing I do publicly- but I need to vent sometimes and she listens and understands, and often offers ideas/suggestions that I have not considered.

I heard that the best counselors go to counselors. To be the best teacher, we need to discuss with other teachers regularly (although a counseling session would be great too!).
It is comforting to know that even at the college level, the concerns for the success of the students is a major factor of teaching.
I can put on the "drill sergeant" persona and behave accordingly, but inside when a students does not do his best, my heart is heavy...

The wind...

Having worked with teenagers for 20 years, I have concluded that on windy days the students are more excitable/anxious.
Perhaps there are more electricity in the air? More pollen? Dust?
Nonetheless, windy days are days for solid lesson plans, alternatives, and maybe some group projects...

I wonder if any one has studied this idea.
Maybe I just need a vacation?
Maybe it is ME that is more susceptible and I pass on MY energy to the students!

This last Saturday we participated in Rake Up Boise. This has been a tradition for Sheridan students for 14 years.
We filled 40 bags from one yard!
The students did a great job and I appreciate the adults who helped also.

We will do another community service project in the spring.

Who are your kids?

I am often asked, "What type of students are at Sheridan?" While I would like to say that they are sons/daughters of millionaire bankers, I refrain and describe them as follows:
Students at Sheridan Academy attend because they feel that our mission/purpose/environment are most effective for them. I describe our students as "not getting a meaningful education in a traditional school setting."
Often our students are the ones in the last row of a class of 36 students and they are drawing and not writing the history notes on the whiteboard. For some reason, they are not focused and learning. Maybe there is a mild learning disability present, maybe there are problems at home, maybe the work is not challenging. For whatever reason, they are not receiving a meaningful education. Many of our students come to us with "holes" in their learning. For example, they are in Algebra, but cannot perform simple operations with fractions. We fill these "holes" so that they can continue their knowledge building (scaffolding).
We work on a positive reinforcement system and the schools runs much like a job- if you perform, you get stuff- if you don't you don't...
Students tell me that we are strict. Yet they want to enroll again. Students want boundaries, they want parameters. We set the bar high and they perform- this allows them success at a university and in the workforce.
Who are my kids? They're our pride and joy.

Not a bad day...

Today, after a focused morning of current events, math, and history, we took a brisk walk, wolfed down lunch then went to BSU to see a student display of the Berlin Wall in the quad. We discussed the significance and Alexander (from Germany) translated the graffiti written on the Wall. The students got "some" sense of the impact that the Wall had on Germany, the people of Berlin, communism, and the world.

Then we parked near the capitol and read the names of the fallen soldiers on the flags.

We then went to the second floor courtroom of the Borah Building and sat with representatives from other nonprofits in the Treasure Valley.
The governor entered and read a proclamation recognizing the week of November 8-12 as "Non-Profit Awareness Week for the State of Idaho."
After the formalities, I lined up our students and the Governor posed for a photo with them. He shook each students' hand and encouraged them to continue their education.

THEN! We went to Fancy Freeze for ice cream and sat in the sun enjoying a beautiful Fall day.

Returning to the school, the students cleaned and then played basketball.

It was another awesome day at Sheridan.

"New Math"

As a child of the '70's I was taught the metric system and "new math." As a teacher, I was schooled to teach reading using "sight word" vocabulary (not phonics).
Yuri Gregarin (sp) orbited the earth in 1959. America needed more scientists- by 1969 school children were learning more about science to compete with the Soviets. America also toyed with going metric.
The "feel good" era of the '70's brought "new math" into our schools. Much of this consisted of estimation and proximity- exactness was not emphasized. Not good when balancing your checkbook!
At "teacher school" we were taught sight-word vocabulary. This method instructed the student to recognize a word based on the letter order- not the phonetical qualities.
All three of the above have shaped my knowledge and the skills/knowledge that I teach my students. I shy from fads, focus on the basics and knowns, and seek a common core of knowledge that should be universal.

Berlin Wall

Twenty years ago? Wow- I can remember when the Wall came down. You could buy a peice of the concrete wall (complete with spay paint graffiti) as a souvenir. I thought of purchasing a piece for my dad as it represents much for which he served- a fighter pilot in the Navy trained to deliver ordiance behind the Iron Curtain.

The German Club at Boise State is re-creating a portion of the Wall. Sheridan Academy's German international student participates in the univeristy's German club and he shared with me that the Berlin Wall may not be the best way to remember or recognize Germany...

Tomorrow we go to the State House to witness the Governor of Idaho sign a proclamation designating this week as "Nonprofit Awareness Week." As we are a nonprofit school, we will particpate in this ceremony...

Our internatonal students (Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Mexico) are doing well with our domestics. They all went to the corn maze/haunted world and had a great time!

Seventy wolves have been killed in Idaho- 130 more to go- our int'l students are amazed that you can buy handguns and rifles so easily (I sold my hunting rifles after I gutted my first deer- YUCK! I'm not THAT hungry...).

He came to me for tutoring in the 5th grade- oh how I remember the "little wild one." He wanted to play, chat, distract, redirect- anything but the assignments due tomorrow... His goal was to not do the work...
Fast forward five years... He calls and says, "Do you remember me?" (OHHHHHH!!!! Yes I DO!!). Well, I want to go to Standford University! Ohhhhhkkkkkkkkkkkk.... So we begin the repair/preparation...
To summarize, he is today enjoying the Standford Summer Program for Prospective Students and experience college life!
Many hours have been spent on papers and assigments, but I am so proud of the opportunity that this lad from Idaho has in front of him! An experience at one of the finest learning insitutions on the planet!

We went to Bogus Basin for a field trip. Our international students took snowboarding lessons and played in the snow for the first time! They get FREE season passes to Bogus! Good Deal!

How many bags of leaves should one yard have???
For the 12th year, Sheridan students and parents/friends participated in "Rake Up Boise."
About 25 of us descended on homes near the school to rake up leaves.
The first home was a MONSTER, but after 2 hours, SIXTY bags were curbside to be recycled...
Pizza at Papa Joe's after the 3 yards we raked was well deserved!!!
Thanks to all the students and parents who showed up to help with one of our yearly Communty Service projects!

Drop his fishing pole...

Many years ago a group of us camped in October on the Boise River near Baumgartner hot springs- ankle deep in fall leaves with no amenties, it was a perfect spot to relax and catch some trout.
Roger built a campfire, and he and I were soon fly fishing for rainbows a mere 30 feet from our camp.
After we had caught and released about 5 picture-perfect trout, he turned to his wife Patty seated near the campfire (so close our fly lines nearly snagged her) and asked if she was OK.
She said, "Roger, I'm cold."
Roger dropped his fly rod, took two steps up the bank, and in 20 minutes had Patty's feet up on a log, a heavy blanket over her and a horeshoe fire built around her...
I looked back at her and she had a huge smile on her face. Roger made her warm.

I have worked with teens for 18 years. I demand a code of class from all.
GENTLEMEN will provide for their date at all costs-biting trout be damned.
LADIES will seek a suitor who will "drop his fishing pole for her."
Seek the giving man.
Sheridan students are schooled in these graces. Let's hope that the schooling takes hold...

Boo!
International students joined us for Tricks and treats walking down Warm Springs Boulevard. About 20 of us dressed and joined the crowd to get candy.
Host families prepped our visitng students very well, and the costumes looked great. I did, however, have to explain that you say, "Trick or Treat!" and that gets you a piece of candy. One confused students asked, "Why are we begging for food?" Lol, she had fun getting snickers and smarties...
"Trick or Treat" was a new celebration for many of our students and they experienced some zombies and were scared silly!
Kudos to the families on Warm Springs who really step up for the Halloween celebrations!

Extreme kitchen make-over!
Today we left the crews from THREE Home Depot Stores at our school to remake our kitchen!
When we returned OUR KITCHEN had been demolished! New microwaves! New counters! new EVERyTHING!

Greetings to all who have looked for a while for something fresh at this blog!
Our 12th year starts very well! We have 7 foreign students who work very hard!
We have returning and new students who realize that Sheridan is the place to LEARN and get in to and succeed in a university!!!!!!!

We have Home Depot giving us an "extreme kitchen makeover" in two weeks!

We have Mr. Welker teaching! and we LOVE his attention to detail!
We have a GREAT article in the Statesman paper showing how we work!
We open the doors to education, but our students MUST WALK THROUGH!
They are learning this.
What did you do today to make a difference in your life and the lives of others?

We held our 11th Annual Awards and Graduation Banquet on June 7 at the Owyhee Plaza Hotel in Boise. Each student received a serious and funny award. Five special awards were given to students and they got some $$$. Congratulations to our three seniors who earned their high school diplomas! Rob, Kevin, and Justine are on their way to do great things!

Every year, as a break from "salut" and "ou est la salle de bain?" we listen to "Les Miserables."
And evey year, it amazes me which students get hooked into this wonderful musical performance.
We enjoyed recently the music of this performance, and it was a huge hit with our students.
"Les Mis" is playing in Salt Lake City! Would you please pay for us to go see it????
This wonderful musical teaches across the curriculum-students learn history, compassion, social unrest, RESPECT, hard work, and CHARACTER!

Students now have a confidence, a poise, a faith that they can tackle subjects which daunted them before...

Semester Finals!!!! Those who "knew" knew: those who didn't-didn't...
Fair and reasonable tests were adminstered to judge knowledge of subject matter. If you didn't study, why do you deserve a credit for the course enrolled?
I-20!!!!! I-20!!!!! We issued our first I-20 to a 17 year-old girl from Vietnam, who, after looking at many schools, wants to attend SHERIDAN ACADEMY for Spring Semester!
She will be hosted by Mrs. Sirani and get a quality education at our school and a true Western experience! WE HAVE MORE FOREIGN students! We need host families! A monthly stipend is paid! Community Service

Sheridan students contribute many hours of community service to the Treasure Valley each year.
Last Saturday, we participated in "Sweep the River" with the Boise Parks and Recreation. Near Willow Lane, we collected trash on the Greenbelt and the Boise River. Students and parents made our town much cleaner! Thank you to all who volunteered your time!

Sheridan Academy: Cultivating a Work Ethic

Recently, I read a survey of business owners and their attitudes about hiring recent high school graduates. Their #1 complaint?? Not that the new worker couldn't do the job, not that they couldn't train the new hire, but that the new hire WASN'T THERE.

Punctuality and attendance are cornerstones of Sheridan Academy's program. We EXPECT our students to be there EVERY day and with a professional attitude, ready to work. WE ARE ONLY IN CLASS 180 DAYS A YEAR! LESS THAN 1/2 A YEAR ARE OUR STUDENTS IN CLASS! SHOW ME A JOB WITH OVER 1/2 A YEAR OFF!

Alas, it concerns me that teens show up late, half-asleep, with no will to perform. Are these the same students we're sending to universities and into the workplace?
Our students write, "Early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable." Public schools don't get $$ if the student doesn't show. We get your tuition regardless. Yet we cannot issue credits if you miss more than 9 classes a semester.

PS: Your future employer will not be givng you any paychecks if you are continuously late! Learn NOW to be on time and ready to work for every shift. You'll get the raise, the "A" grade at college, and the pride knowing that even when you felt lousy, you still did your best work.

We have started our 11th year! I am SO proud of all the students who have benefited from our unique academic and social programs!

Mrs. Sirani is a saint for continuing to provide quality teaching to our students as she finishes her Master's Degree.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Next Friday, 9/15 we visit Edwards Cinema to view "World Trade Center." We leave Sheridan at 1300 hours. I'm concerned as many of our students do not remember 9/11/01 and that they need to share in the courage of Americans against attacks on our love of freedom!

We are mailing letters to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan next week. (How cool to get a letter back from a soldier.)

Week of September 10: Bring tennis racquets! We'll try our hand at tennis during daily P.E.

Saturday, Sept. 16: "Sweep the River." We have participated in the yearly cleanup of our river. Meet at the tennis courts in Julia Davis Park at 9am. Bring gloves. (How sad that I must warn students not to pick up syringes.)

Our UNIFORMS are a success! Our students LOOK GREAT! Keep the shirts tucked in! Soon to the Governor's office to visit! Look sharp!

Some important activities!

1) We've partnered with the local public elementary school and Sheridan students visit daily to work with kindergarten and first graders to improve their reading and language skills. Our students love helping the younger students!

2) We're touring Micron technologies tomorrow! Look sharp students! This is GREAT company for which to work! Get it together!

3) We've been approved to issue "I-20" Student Visa forms for foreign students!!!!!

Why the first week(s) at Sheridan Academy may be tough.

Many students "hate" the first week or two at Sheridan Academy. There are some simple explanations for this: First, we usually grade an assignment immediately after the student completes it. If the assignment is not up to the student's abilities, and Sheridan's requirements, the assignment is redone before moving on to the next task. Immediate feedback allows the student to correct any errors, ask for guidance, and expand his/her knowledge base. Unfortunately, many student come from large classrooms where assignments submitted often took a day or two to be returned. Immediate feedback can be frustrating for a student who is accustomed to just turning in (or not turning in) mediocre work and not seeing the grade until much later.

Second, we hold our students to higher levels of accountability. Teenagers are capable of higher standards expected in most situations. Sheridan Academy focuses on those traits that will allow the students to acquire the best education, be SUCCESSFUL in other learning environments, and STAND OUT as educated, talented, CLASSY youth who have vision, acceptance, and GOALS on which they are working everyday!

When a student dresses poorly, makes inappropriate comments, is selfish, submits sub-par work, they are CALLED on it and this may create frustration--this is growth. Our students will be held to standards higher than those in their past learning environments.

We're two-for-two! For the second time in two years, a Sheridan Academy senior has been accepted at Boise State University to be duel-enrolled in both college and high school! Alex P. did AWESOME on the Compass test and he is ready to begin his college degree! Way to go, Alex!!
